Just before Ed and Katharine were to depart Belgrade, Joan Clark hosted a dinner party in their honor. As they left the bungalow for this one last soiree, Ed raised his eyebrows at Katharine as she grabbed her work bag on their way out the door. When they arrived at Joan’s apartment, Katharine discreetly set the bag down on the floor and continued into the party. Ten minutes later, making sure no one was looking, their host, Joan, picked the bag up, disappeared into her bedroom for two minutes, then returned, placing the bag where she had found it. Katharine watched it all out of the corner of her eye and felt victorious that Joan, though she didn’t know it, now had the first portion of the manuscript for The New Class packaged up to be carried outside of the country.

Katharine and Ed settled into the evening, the sparkle of the crystal no match for the laughter and tears that ran more freely than the alcohol. After dinner, Ed and Katharine sipped their cocktails as they moved more intimately around the guests, diplomats and journalists from multiple countries. No one in their circles believed in goodbyes as their paths were likely to cross again, but the Clarks had been a social anchor for so many of them, hosting parties at their small house and always taking time to help. They would be sorely missed in Belgrade’s expatriate life.

Toward the end of the night, Katharine found herself alone with Joan. Her friend nodded at the new political officer from the embassy and told Katharine that he was the one heading to Trieste the day after next. Although the officer didn’t know it yet, he would be the one to send the package Joan had taken out of Katharine’s bag earlier in the night, the one addressed to Katharine’s attention at Time’s office in Berlin. When Joan had told her of this new officer and his trip to Trieste the week before, Katharine had known instantly this would be how she would get The New Class out of Yugoslavia. Katharine smiled to herself as she thought about how the first half of Milovan’s politically charged book would be out of the country in less than forty-eight hours. She knew she would have to get the remainder out eventually. Milovan had not finished it. But she would deal with that when the time came.
